Today’s etiquette tip may have a difference of opinion due to generational gaps. My generation might think this behavior is totally acceptable and normal, while the baby boomer generation may think this lacks class or tact. The Scenario: A boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife invites guests out for the significant others surprise celebration at a restaurant and then proceeds to divide up the bill at the end of the meal. This Etiquette Tuesday focuses on the tact or lack there of behind dividing up the bill in this instance. To do or not to do? That is the question.

For many in my generation, this might be totally acceptable because we expect to pay our share of the bill during birthday celebrations. On the other hand, many from the baby boomer generation expect to cover the expenses of their significant others celebration. For a surprise party I feel, however, that I should be the one covering the expenses for my significant other. As I get older, I see myself progressively heading toward this way of handling things. When my bank account was less than stable I did not see this way of thinking because I had this incessant need to save every dime.

What do you think? Pay for the whole thing or divvy up the check? Let’s discuss.
