Etiquette Tuesday: French Twist

There are numerous reasons why I love the food scene in the District, but the number one reason are the people who make up this amazing scene.  Thanks to French Twist D.C., I have this week’s Etiquette Tuesday.  Last week, we all gathered at the opening of PAUL Bakery to toast and nibble on all the macaroons one person can manage in one sitting.  Remembering how much I love talking about food and dining etiquette, French Twist DC shot over this link to PAUL’S website highlighting French dining etiquette tips.  Love it.  One of the rare, and I mean rare, things you will find on a restaurant/bakery/sandwich shop/etc. website is a section dedicated to etiquette tips.  Besides the fact that this site specifically targets French dining tips, I like the trend that it could set for other restaurant websites.

PAUL’S Guide to French Manners does not only apply to French dining etiquette, a few of these tips need to be reiterated in the American dining experience.  Let’s take a quick look at some of my top picks:

1. Never pick up a piece of bread and hand it to the person beside/at your table.  (Gross, even if you washed your hands ten times.  Unless it is your child or your significant other, refrain from this type of behavior.)

2. For bread- Tear a manageable mouthful off with your fingers, pop it into your mouth, close your mouth, chew and swallow.  (Nothing sets me off in Alien v. Predator motions than someone talking with a mouth full of food. Yuck.)

3. Keep the slices regular and avoid cutting them too thick.  (This makes it easier for the eater.)

I could go on and on because PAUL’S list has a few things I want to share, but I’ll stop here.  Let’s just say this week’s tip is a smorgasbord…kind of like PAUL’S, a little of this and a little of that.

One important distinction: it’s a French MACARON, not a macaroon!
