Zengo is whipping up ramen for lunch so of course I took a field trip. Zengo is an artful blend of Latin-Asian styles and flavors and Chef-owner Richard Sandoval, whose accolades include Bon Appétit Restaurateur of the Year and Mexico’s Toque d’Oro, has spun regional ingredients into one of my lunch favorites. Because the middle of the day can get heavy, the bar menu is there to take the edge off. The menu features hand-muddled cocktails as well as Latin wines, Japanese sakes and over 400 Tequilas. The restaurant invites guests to ’eat quick’ in the casual, street-level lunch bar, or ‘take it slow’ in the upstairs dining room. If the heat has you dizzy at the thought of hot ramen, guests may choose from lunch-only menu items, including bento boxes, latin-asian sandwiches, and bowls of rice and noodles. Johnna Rowe is a Harlem NY native with deep roots in Washington, DC and North Carolina. All three places have heavily influenced her life and the foods she loves today. After graduating Howard University School of Law and beginning her life as a young professional in the city she was led to start Johnna Knows Good Food in November 2007 to keep family, friends and colleagues updated on where to go and what to eat while dining in the nation’s capitol.
