  • Uggghhh, I hated chemistry and physics in high school.  If food were not involved in this whole operation, I would have dismissed the idea a long time ago.  The International Spy Museum is taking me back to school tonight with an evening of entertaining and informative presentations on the specific gravity, surface area and pH Levels for creating the perfect cocktail.  Guests will also enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, hands-on demonstrations and a chance to sample signature drinks.  “The Science Behind the Cocktail” is brought to you by Canadian Mist and hosted by The International Spy Museum. 

The When:  Thursday, September 30, 2010 from 6 to 8 PM.

Who Can Come?:  This event is open to anyone 21 years of age or older.  Space is limited and reservations can be made online at www.spymuseum.org or by calling (202) 654-0991.

  • The New Vintage Scavenger Hunt that was scheduled for this Saturday is CANCELLED.  It will be rescheduled for next Spring.  Stay tuned…
  • On Friday, October 1st, Food & Friends, the only organization in the National Capital Region providing home-delivered meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life challenging illnesses, launches its fourth annual Slice of Life Thanksgiving pie sale (*Presented by Walmart).  Members of the public can support Food & Friends’ by purchasing pies during the fundraiser.  Each pie purchased will provide ONE FULL DAY of MEALS for a Food & Friends client.  Some of the pies on the menu:  Picture Perfect Pumpkin, Harvest Apple Crumb, Oh So Sweet Potato and Southern Pecan flavors are available for $25 each, and the US Airways Sky Pie – a Creamy Chocolate Covered Cheesecake – is $40.  Those who purchase the US Airways Sky Pie will receive one chance to win a US Airways gift card, valued at $1,200.  Donors may also purchase a pie for a Food & Friends client that will be delivered with their holiday meal on Thanksgiving Day.

The When:  Kicks off tomorrow until November 18, 2010

The Where:  Pies may be purchased directly from Food & Friends or through one of its corporate or individual pie sellers.  Visit www.foodandfriends.org/pie to find a directory of pie sellers in the community, sign up to help sell pies or purchase online via the website.  Pie pick-up will be held at one of 21 CVS/pharmacy locations throughout DC, Maryland and Virginia or Food & Friends’ office on Tuesday, November 23rd, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Johnna French is a Harlem NY native with deep roots in Panama, Washington, DC and North Carolina. All four places have heavily influenced her life and the foods she loves today.
