The Sugar Cookies

The Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Topping:

1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cream together the shortening, sugar and brown sugar. Mix in the egg, then buttermilk and vanilla. Combine all the dry ingredients. Stir into the creamed mixture and chill the dough for 1 hour-1 1/2 hours. Spoon a tsp. of the mixture (rounded) on to a lightly greased baking sheet (should be about 2-3 inches apart).

For the topping:

Combine the topping ingredients and sprinkle on top of the cookie dough. Bake for 7-10 minutes or until done. Serve!

*Johnna’s tip: Sugar cookies are deliciously sweet. When we think of fulfilling the sweet tooth, this is the cookie that comes to mind. Decorate the cookies with your favorite icings or even some M&M’s to make them special for your guests or a party you’re hosting…have fun and make this one with the kids, they’ll love decorating smiley faces on about 4 dozen cookies;-)
