Etiquette Tuesday: The Decision Maker
A reader recently went out on a date with a guy who liked to order for her. I had to use this for my next Etiquette Tuesday because I have mixed feelings on this issue. This weeks etiquette tip: Let me make my own decision. Now I love when I go to a restaurant and you have a suggestion for something I should definitely try, we should go for it. There are other times, however, where I have my mind set on what I want.
Now I know there are instances where budget restraints are involved and the guy wants to take you out for a night on the town but doesn’t want to break the bank. He may feel that if he orders something you can both share during appetizer time, this cuts down about 25% of the cost. Though this is budget friendly, this could mean no second date. Who wants to go somewhere and be told what to order?? Suggestions are fine. Totally. Ordering for me, not so good.
Moral of the story: Let me make my own decision. If money is the issue, perhaps we should try a place where everything is within your budget. There is nothing wrong with suggesting the cool pizza joint over the white linen service if I can order what I want. On the flip side, this does come with restraints: Ladies, do not proceed to order everything on the pizza joint menu…compromise, people.

Yea, that’s a tad strange for a guy to insist on picking the food for and ordering food for his date. I have, howerver, dated a couple guys who, after discussing the menu with me and finding out what I had decided on for myself, would tell the waiter both of our orders at the same time. I appreciated that approach.
