Etiquette Tuesday: Scheduling Conflicts

A part of writing about food is clearly visiting tons of restaurants.  For myself and many other food bloggers, sometimes these restaurant visits are due to personal invites from the restaurants.  These media/food events can last anywhere from one hour to three hours depending on what type of event it is and on this Etiquette Tuesday I focus on the impatient blogger.  This post was inspired by an event I went to a couple of months ago and one of my fave foodies had sent an ambassador out to the event because they could not make it to the event.  This ambassadors behavior is the reason I am reluctant to send anyone besides myself and Archele on food missions for JKGF.

This person complained, pouted and seemed unengaged due to the pace of the event.  This displeasure was voiced once we were seated and they promptly asked “how long is this going to take?”.  How rude?! No matter what the intentions are of the restaurant inviting you, this is still an invitation extended in some form of kindness specifically the restaurant or PR company respects the work that you do as a blogger.  When scheduling an event, you should keep in mind this could take up much of your evening and if  you need to leave there is another way to excuse yourself from the event i.e. “I need to leave a little early to get to another event” or “I did not plan to stay long but thank you for the info provided thus far”.  There are so many ways to get out of this situation but being rude is not one of them.

This Etiquette Tuesday, I encourage all my fellow food bloggers, ambassadors and the like to plan accordingly.  If the event runs past your allotted time, politely excuse yourself and leave.  On the other hand, where the invite says 6:30 start time, expect to be there at least until 8:30…

This reminds me of the person who is always on their way to the next event because no event is important enough to satisfy their ego. They are more important than the President.
