World Tour: Taiwan

Chef Hou's Beef Noodle Soup

Last night I had the honor of dining with Ambassador Jason C. Yuan over Spring Rolls, Seasoned Pickles, Sauteed Minced Beef and Caramel & Strawberry Mousse Cake.  The real reason we were all gathered at the Twin Oaks Estate on this Thursday night was to taste Chef Hou Chun-sheng’s winning recipe which was featured at the 2011 Taipei International Beef Noodle Soup Festival.  Chef Hou’s Beef Noodle Soup was created in Taiwan and is a popular street food on the island.  Tender slices of beef, green onions, homemade noodles, tomatoes and cilantro were some of the signature ingredients.

The thing about me and food is that I will cross the globe to try something that I simply saw on T.V. (*that’s how I ended up in China in 2008…).  After seeing the process first hand courtesy The Asia Society Washington and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in the United States, I am convinced I need to make a trip to Taiwan.  That trip will have to wait, however, until I get another cheap flight from American Airlines to visit the foreign land.  Chef Hou may have come to the Nation’s Capitol to share his award winning recipe, but he made it clear that the way he makes the recipe in Taiwan was actually different.  Trip booked.  I need to know how!

World Tour: Post-Miami Thoughts

Now that I’m back home from Miami, I can’t help but dwell on some of the amazing food that I got to experience. It was so good, I’m honestly trying to figure out the next time I’ll have enough American Airlines points so that I can book a cheap flight and hightail it back for more. I just thought I’d share my experience with you all by posting a couple of pics.

World Tour: Super Bowl XLVI

Image via Wikipedia

There are a few times a year that are specifically set aside for you to pig out on all things comfort.  This weekend marks the first major pig out party of the year: the Super Bowl.  Wings, dips you would never eat any other time and all the pizza you can dream of will fill American living rooms across the country.  Being a native New Yorker, I am especially excited to see the Giants take the field and hopefully bring a win back.  If I had’ve saved my United Airlines points properly, I would probably be headed to Indianapolis on a cheap flight but I’ll simply have to depend on my big screen like most spectators of the sport.

While I’ll be enjoying the halftime show from the comforts of someones living room couch, here are a few spots to check out in the District for Super Bowl day shenanigans:

Café St. Ex

Fuel Pizza & Wings

Café Asia

Hudson Restaurant and Lounge

The State Theatre

Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse

McFadden’s DC

Buffalo Billiards

Cleveland Park Bar & Grill

Penn Quarter Sports Tavern

World Tour: Good Italian eats!

I’ve come up with yet another way to get my Italian food fix since I haven’t accumulated enough United Airlines points to book an international flight the country infamous for its pasta, pizza and beautiful people. I put a little twist on my spaghetti that I found to be quite tasty and so I thought I’d share it with all of you. All I did, was substitute ground beef with ground turkey and I added a sauteed medley of zucchini, fresh mushrooms and diced tomatoes to the mix. I used my store-bought tomato sauce of preference and added hot sauce and sugar until it had just the right flavor. It was quick, simple and absolutely mouthwatering!

World Tour: Pre-Miami Thoughts

Bayside at Night. Image via Planetware

It’s that time of the year again for me. Time for me to board a flight and go down to Miami and spend my days and nights at the American Airlines arena for my job’s conference. While I am not particularly excited about the work aspect of it all, I am looking forward to those rare occasions when I will have the chance to experience the explore Miami’s food scene. I am well aware of the huge Cuban influence in Miami and so I know that grabbing some of the best put-together pork sandwiches will definitely be on my food to-do list, but after that I’m stumped. Other than the popular Bayside food hangouts, I never had the chance let my taste buds roam in Miami – research and suggestions are definitely in order! If you know of any restaurants that are a display of the Miami food scene, let me know!
