Food.Fun.Stuff: ‘Tis the Season!
FaLaLaLaLaLaLaLa! ‘Tis the season of…giving. This season the District will be more on the receiving end.
To start with BGR in conjunction with DC Central Kitchen kicks off One for One this December. One for One is the new way to give: for every burger sold, BGR will donate one burger to DC Central Kitchen. All three BGR locations will be participating for one month (December 1-31, 2009). From the brainstorming of Mark Bucher (BGR founder and President) and Mike Curtin (CEO of DC Central Kitchen), they have developed our favorite giving opportunity of the season. This basically works how the Way to Save of Wachovia or the Keep the Change Program of Bank of America, but instead of the $ going in your pocket, it is donated to someone who is in need. Tis the season to eat. Let’s buy burgers so all can feast in the District!
Gift #2: As we wave “Goodbye” to the California Pizza Kitchen on Connecticut Avenue, we say “Hello” to BLT Burger and Casa Nonna (*which is set to move in the old CPK spot this Spring). The New York-based BLT is expanding its signature brand with Casa Nonna which will serve up pizza, pasta and antipasti. BLT Burger will open @ 1317 Connecticut Avenue, NW Washington, DC. Two newbies, we love it! More info here.
Gift #3: Finally!!! A new diner. Coming from the city of diners, it was quite a culture shock to learn that DC seriously lacks in this department. Why aren’t there more spots for the cheap, greasy, good late night stuff?!? Tom Sietsema reports that the masterminds behind Nooshi and Spices (*Chef Jessie Yan and Vanessa Lim) are set to open a diner in Cleveland Park. Omelets, sandwiches and steaks (*the usual suspects…) will line the menu. It is slated to open as early as 6 am and on weekends stay open as late as 2 am. We always wondered what they would do with that big empty space on Connecticut…We are uber-excited that it is going to the ultimate good use: food:-) More info here.

Uggh, not for the District, but for our NYC readers!: Thanks to Not Eating Out in New York for forwarding us this info- Come one, come all for a night of excerpts from upcoming documentary films that focus on food and agricultural issues. This event is hosted by the “Hungry Filmakers“ which is a not-for-profit event hosted by Anthology Film Archives and Jimmy’s No. 43 and curated by food writer Cathy Erway and filmmaker Shelley Rogers. On December 15, 2009, the Anthology Film Archives will be full of filmmakers, food activists and food bloggers watching and discussing such films as “What’s “Organic” About Organic?” (*Shelley Rogers) and “The Greenhorns” (*Severine von Tscarner Fleming). This will be followed up by none other than…an after-party. The after-party will happen at Jimmy’s No. 43 which will be serving up snacks from local purveyors (*Flying Pigs Farm, Schoolhouse Kitchen and Hot Bread Kitchen, just to name a few…) and the bar will feature specials on Ommegang Beer.
The Where: Anthology Film Archives, 32 2nd. Avenue, NY, NY 10003
The When: December 15, 2009, doors open @ 7 pm and screening begins @ 7:30 pm
The Money: $10 per person, get tickets here. Any proceeds garnered from the evening will be donated to the nonprofit organization Just Food (*Promotes access of fresh, seasonal, sustainably grown food for all New York City residents).
