Hearts of America's Charity in Chocolate

There was a time in my life when I had the funds to shop and where Gucci shoes were on someone else’s tab (*the ‘rents) with not a care in the world.  Things have changed dramatically with my introduction to Mr. Light Bill, Mr. Cable Bill and Mr. Car Note.  With a wardrobe that looks like I have not been shopping since 1998, I am ready for a makeover.  Starting this weekend I will reinvent my look with three local events that, unlike myself, have stayed in touch with today’s Vogue.  Of course, they have food involved:

*This weekend I will pull out my skinny jeans in hopes that they will fit or I’ll be like Cinderella’s stepsisters trying to squeeze their feet in the glass slippers before I head to the Capital Area Food Bank’s Blue Jeans Ball.  With the honorary chair of this year’s Blue Jeans Ball being First Lady Michelle Obama, I am excited to search for a new pair of baby blues.  Proceeds will go toward benefiting the Capital Area Food Bank.  Main event details: Cocktails and silent auction (6 pm), tastings and live auction (7 pm) and live music and dancing (9 pm).  Notable eats include local restaurants such as Mintwood Place, Estadio and PS7′s.  More info here.

*The Georgetown French Market returns on Friday and Saturday, April 27th & 28th, 2012 from 10 am to 5 pm 2012 with 43 participating merchants.  Just a couple of things to look out for: ”Chic Girl” cocktails @ Urban Chic, shoppers will receive 15% off full-priced clothing and denim; and up to 75% off sale merchandise at Urban Chic.  Café Bonaparte, a Georgetown French bistro, will offer 50% off all sweet crepes for the weekend.

*I’ll learn how to pair sweets with my wardrobe.  I told you about Charity for Chocolate earlier this month, didn’t I?  If your forgot, here’s a word-for-word recap:

Heart of America’s Charity in Chocolate:  The event features tastings from more than 50 top local chefs/restaurants, with the highlight of the night being DC’s only Chocolate Fashion Show, where models walk the runway in dresses and accessories made from chocolate and sugar.  On April 23, 2012, the National Building Museum will be filled with savory and sweet tasting stations, silent and live auctions and an open bar.  Get tickets here.”

Cheers to the weekend, fashion…and of course FOOD.

Mix it Up

Following up to my recent meal at Cedar Restaurant, I got word that they are hosting a cocktail class as the 2nd part in their dinner series, Sunday Experience, on Sunday April 29, 2012.  The leader of the pack, mixologist Matt Perkins, plans to take guests on a journey down pre-Prohibition Era cocktails.  With the use of local ingredients and an imagination, the recipes boast a look at cocktails in a way you have never seen around these parts.  No cocktail would be right (*well in my book…) without food which is why I was excited to hear about Cedar’s new executive chef, Chef Aaron McCloud, line up.  Five small plates inspired by the restaurants theme of contemporary country fare make up the pairing menu.

Guests can look forward to pairings of Roast Duck Mouselline alongside “The Southern Senator” cocktail and fresh bay scallops ceviche alongside “The Crimson Slipper” (*Pyrat Rum, Campari, Cointreau, dash of Peychaud’s bitters…yum.).  Since time is of the essence I made it easier to snag your tickets after reading this: give them a buzz at (202) 637-0012. Cheers!

Lamb and More Lamb

A couple of months ago I talked your ear off about lamb and now I have everyone asking me how that turned out.  The lamb turned out absolutely delicious but the competition quickly got fierce and I was knocked off the chopping block.  Now a month later, I’m here again to share more lamb but this time I will not do the cooking.

Twenty-two area chefs will participate in the 2nd Annual Lamb Jam courtesy the American Lamb Board.  On Monday, May 21, 2012 (6 pm-9 pm), lamb, breweries and wineries will fill up Eastern Market.  Chefs will compete for the following titles: Best of Show, 1st Place Awards for Shoulder, Leg of Lamb, Shank and Loin tastes.  Guests will also have the opportunity to vote and determine the People’s Choice winner.  The People’s Choice Award for 2011 went to John Critchley from Urbana.  Wonder who will take the title this year??  Purchase tickets here.

1 Day Gi.Ve.Aw.Ay

Living in the District has taught me a few things about networking:  always have business cards.  People carry them around this city the way they carry their wallets and I have received more than a few frowns for not having them in tow.  This is the reason I was excited to have another opportunity to giveaway business cards to my like-minded readers.  Having the right business card can leave the impression that you want or can have you quickly forgotten in the mix.  A year ago, I decided I wanted to give people something to remember and what better than a pic of yours truly.  I ordered these 2″x2″ cards from UPrinting and stamped it with my alter egos.  Positive feedback has been gushing in and I am pleased to have yet another opportunity to get some new biz cards through the UPrinting business card printing giveaway.

How to enter? Simply “Like” Johnna Knows Good Food and UPrinting on Facebook and you are automatically entered to win.  A winner will be chosen at midnight tomorrow night, April 17, 2012.  Winner will receive 250 business cards from UPrinting.

Disclaimer: You should assume that I will receive free print products in exchange for the post. Any and all reviews posted are based solely on my own experience and may be atypical. Please practice due diligence in making any related purchase decisions.

Revive

Revive Jerk Chicken

In a city where the restaurant industry thrives on diversity, it always amazes me that there so few soul food restaurants.  Coming from Harlem and living in North Carolina, my body is accustomed to all things comfort and soulful i.e. soul food.  After receiving a Palm Sunday afternoon invite to visit a spot on Florida Avenue boasting good soul food, I made my trek across town to see if it was worth another trip to this side of town.  More than worth it, Revive has me thinking I need to change my route home to grab dinner.

Revive Fried Fish

As many of you know I’ve traveled far and wide for food e.g. Rome for pasta, China for noodles and LA for Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles.  I thought chicken and waffles did not exist (*think Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles here…) on this part of the East Coast.  Round of applause to Revive for not only implementing the southern California classic but innovating it with RED VELVET.  Maybe I’m a novice to this but I do know Red Velvet waffles are not around these parts and by these parts I mean DC.

Small, casual with most of the restaurant space used for the kitchen, Revive is ideal for carry out or delivery.  The menu offers the usual suspects of a soul food menu with reasonable price points (*$5-$10).  My only issue was the parking along this Florida Avenue/North Capitol intersection which could deter even the soul food lover in me from visiting.  To my relief, Revive offers curbside service (*every restaurant should be doing this by now…).

Revive Red Velvet Chicken & Waffles

After hearing me rant about the Red Velvet waffles, you would think this was the best part of my meal.  Ironically, the pivotal point in my meal was when I bit into Revive’s fried chicken.  Juicy, tender, crispy without all the greasy spillage describes the 5-10 minutes of bliss I experienced.  I tried my hand at retrieving the recipe, of course, but to no avail.  Revive is not giving up the goods.  They are, however, giving up the goods for you to taste and if you know one thing about dining in DC: get to it before everyone else.
