Spring is upon us: Park Hyatt Washington will host Park Hyatt Masters of Food & Wine, a seasonal culinary experience on Saturday, March 24, saluting the ingredients, flavors, and talents of local chefs, regional artisans and producers, and master tea makers.  Get the full schedule here.

Walmart unveiled the “Great for You” icon in D.C. yesterday.  The icon, part of the company’s healthier food initiative, is an effort to implement a transparent, summary icon for its private label brand products backed by nutrition criteria. “Great For You” will initially appear on select Walmart Great Value and Marketside items, as well as on fresh and packaged fruits and vegetables at Walmart U.S. stores nationwide this spring.  By extending “Great For You” to fruits and vegetables and nutritious food options the company will make it easier for its customers to identify the healthy food selections in the store.

Melody Tavern celebrated its Grand Opening last week with yours truly and many of the areas notable public figures. Kudos to Northern VA for bringing this cool jazz bar/restaurant to their Potomac Yards neighborhood.

On Monday, I picked up the largest piece of lamb to begin my journey toward becoming one of the four DC food bloggers to take the title in the D.C. American Lamb Pro-Am competition.  Because they did not cut me any slack on the competition, I have been working diligently to at least get myself in the running.  I will need your votes next week so I can bring one home for the team…emails/blog posts/Facebook messages/telegrams/etc. to follow!

This week I had the opt to hang out with one of my fave food bloggers, French Twist D.C., at Zengo for the launch of their new Shanghai-San Paulo fusion menu.  Pomegranate Kumquat cocktails, Picahna Steak topped with King Crab and Coconut Batida’s made for an excellent way to dine in D.C. on a random Wednesday night. #lovetherandomness

My Dining Recap

The Hamilton Ribbon Cutting

The Hamilton is open in full swing.  The restaurant that is attracting attention from all of the DMV’s dining media as a one stop shop for food, entertainment and cocktails.  After attending the ribbon cutting ceremony last week, I can see this place becoming a staple in the DC area not only because it offers everything you basically need for a night on the town but it is open 24 hours. Unheard of in this city (*except for the few spots that we are all tired of frequenting…).  In efforts to nibble on the city that never sleeps, Mayor Vincent Gray has hopes that The Hamilton will put the city on the map for offering 24 hour dining options.  I see 3 am eating in my near future….

The Capital Grille Lobster Roll & Roasted Root Veggies

The Capital Grille has made some lunch menu changes.  I stopped in last week when the snow (*that did not stick) had just began to come down.  Since soup was in order, it was pleasant to see that the restaurant had added a roasted pepper soup though I decided to stick to the classics with the Clam Chowder.  The thing I really appreciate about The Capital Grille is that is stays consistent in service and classic menu options that are often needed on days when the snowy, cold weather is putting a dagger in  my day.  The lobster roll seemed fitting behind my soup and I paired with the newly added roasted root vegetables which was a medley of seasonal root vegetables.

Lump Crab Guacamole

Uncle Julio’s has three new twists on guacamole.  Three-pepper spicy guacamole, pineapple bacon guacamole and roasted corn & lump crab guacamole make up the new roster.  The old saying goes “bacon makes everything better” and it did the trick when mixed with the sweet pineapple.  I was interested to try these new guac’s mostly because they liven up the basic avocado mix with a splash of food creativity.  The crab is an excellent idea and I would love to see this grace more menus during the Spring and Summer months.  My least fave of the three was the three-spice and ironically it was because it was not spicy enough (*the irony comes in because I cannot stand spicy food!).  These should be fun during people watching time in Bethesda during the Spring/Summer seasons.

Last night, I visited Aqua Al 2 on the Hill.  I am in love.  This place takes me back to many afternoons spent in Europe.  On this particular evening, the quiet, serene street may have clouded my vision of what it will be like during the summer months when Eastern Market is in full swing, but I have a plan.  I figure if I frequent the restaurant during the chillier months, I can somewhat wallow in the memories of times spent at European cafes.  Relaxed and casual with the classic touches of Otis Redding playing lightly in the background, I am looking forward to the Balsamic Steak folks have been raving about at the restaurant.

Crumbs Cupcakes

After roaming around Eastern Market, I returned home to an assortment of sweet delicacies courtesy Crumbs Bake Shop.  Enough flavors to put a smile on even The Grinch’s face, I snagged a couple of shots and dug in.  Cupcakes have truly come along way from the boring vanillas and chocolates of the past…Crumbs assortment came topped with M&M’s, Oreo’s and Little Debbie’s cake designs, among others.  The store has expanded in the District with openings on L Street (*1107 19th street NW)  and at L’Enfant (*L’Enfant Plaza food pavilion) on January 18, 2012 (*yesterday).  Contact me if you want to take a bite: Free cupcake coupons, coffee coupons and Buy One, Get One Free coupons to anyone who hits me up on Twitter @jknowsgoodfood or comments below.

This & That

NEW

Flank Steak Sandwich

J&G Steakhouse has a new lunch menu for those on the go.  The JG2GO is the typical lunch selections with J&G quality that you can pick up at the wine bar or by using their “15 minutes free” parking spot (*located on the curb in front of J&G patio) that you can use while you go in and grab your food.  For a place that is so crafty with steaks, they also have a pretty good handle on the area’s famed crab cakes.  Pair with one of their house-made sodas and a nutty crusted brownie.

Clyde’s Restaurant Group is slated to open The Hamilton before the end of the year.  The Hamilton will take up the corner of 14th & F and already has a full lineup of live music beginning with The Junkyard Saints on December 23.

HOLIDAY FOOD

The holidays are not over.  There are still more dinners to be had and more leftovers to fill up the fridge.  Whole Foods Market has created this helpful list of ways to utilize the rest of those vegetables, sweet potatoes and rolls.  Check it out here.

One of my favorite things to do is to share recipes.  Some people are opposed to sharing their “prized” recipes but its people like Carole Murko that I appreciate.  Carole Murko is the woman behind Heirloom Meals, a collection of recipes handed down from generation to generation.  Carole was recently featured on PBS for their Thanksgiving special showcasing some of this recipes with rich history.  You can find her recipes here.

WINTER TOAST

Starbucks Reserve Sun Dried Ethiopia Harrar Coffee

I’m staying warm this winter with Starbucks (*naturally). This time instead of my skinny vanilla latte, I’m switching to their Reserve Sun Dried Ethiopia Harrar Premium coffee.  It’s mostly due to this nifty little box it came in (*pictured above), but also because the coffee boasts flavors of dried berries, chocolate and rummy spice.  Sounds like all I need in the morning.

Ciroc Skinny Cosmo

Diddy does not stop.  This is honestly the hardest working man who has now made his way to the food world in a dynamic way.  The mogul has merged with Zagat to create a guide to the hottest restaurants during the holidays.  The District made the list of cities with Zengo, Zola and Russia House listed as some of the hottest restaurants for the holidays.  In addition to Diddy’s picks, there are Ciroc cocktail recipes for each region and I love the name of the District’s cocktail: Ciroc Skinny Cosmo.  I guess the secret is out, the District is the land of the “skinny” something…skinny latte, skinny frappuccino and now the skinny Cosmo.  Download the free guide here.
