Spending Time with Cameron Hughes This Summer

[ 0 ] May 25, 2017 |

It is that time of year again when sitting outside is more appealing than being locked in your office all day. Personally, I prefer a crisp glass of wine with that outdoor time and jumped at the opportunity to taste wines procured by Cameron Hughes.  Cameron Hughes wines are unique to the affordable wine world where the company was actually founded and run by Cameron “Cam” and his wife, Jessica Kogan-Hughes (a D.C. native).  Many producers that carry the namesake of their company are so untouchable that you would never see them at a random event in the city but Cameron Hughes goes by different rules.  Cam visited last month to share the latest varietals with the District vino community.

Carrying a full range of reds and whites, Cameron Hughes wines can be paired with just about any meal. Last night, for instance, I wanted a juicy steak and a nice glass of red to match.  The 2014 Cameron Hughes Lot 575 Red Mountain Red Blend is EVERY.THING.  The deep berry notes with a chocolate finish brought out the best of both worlds with my grilled (medium) flank steak.  Sweet, but savory, the consummate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah meet in this glass.  For under $20, you are getting a steal in a bottle.

On the lighter side if white wine is your thing, the 2015 Cameron Hughes Lot 533 Santa Barbara County Chardonnay is another steal. The warm, florescence nature of this wine reminds you why summer is an awesome season.  Served chilled, I think this wine would fare well by itself.  I chose BBQ’d chicken and this may have been overkill on the sweet factor.  Apple and lemon come to mind when thinking of the staple fruits so the acidity is something to consider in choosing what dishes to pair with this wine.  Try an extremely savory fish or chicken and leave the sugar boost to your glass.

Cameron Hughes has an array of wines that I could go on talking about but you get the picture:  It is all good around these parts.  For under $20, I can get a quality wine to serve alongside my $20+ steaks and seafood??  Yes, please.
