  • On July 19th No Kid Hungry will be hosting their second Chefs Behind Bars event.  Six DC chefs will be battling head to head to see who makes the best cocktail on the DNV Rooftop at the Donovan Hotel while raising funds to end childhood hunger.   • NKOTB (New Kitchens On The Block) is coming to Mess Hall on Sunday, July 31, 2016.  The event is designed to give diners an exclusive chance to try seven new restaurants before they open (703 Edgewood St NE, Washington, DC 20017; messhalldc.com). The line-up features:

August 2016

  • The 71st Annual Rotary Club of Annapolis Crab Feast will be held on Friday, August 5, rain or shine, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, 550 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis.  Crustacean lovers feast on the Chesapeake Bay’s bounty at this all-you-can-eat and drink event that is arguably the largest crab feast in the world. Nearly 2,500 individuals are expected to finish off 345 bushels of #1 crabs (that’s nearly 40,000 of the big ones), 3,400 ears of corn, 100 gallons of crab soup, 1,800 hot dogs, 150 pounds of beef barbeque, and hundreds of gallons of beer and soft drinks.

  • Mason Dixie Biscuit Company presents DixieFest this fall, a family- and dog-friendly music, food and arts festival that boasts the charming warmth of the south, much like the Mason Dixie Biscuit brand experience.  DixieFest takes over 19,000 square feet with concerts, food, product and art showcasing, shopping, and entertainment on August 6, 2016 from noon-8 pm.  Tickets are on sale now and vary from general admission to VIP and multiple festival experiences.  Details can be found at www.masondixiebiscuits.com.  DixieFest is also proud to support the DC Arts and Humanities Collaborative with a portion of the proceeds.
  • The DNV Rooftop is currently hosting roasts on select Sunday evenings this season. Ticket holders get to  enjoy the rooftop pool (access is normally restricted to hotel guests staying at The Donovan ), music by DJ J-$crilla and sunsets over Thomas Circle Park.  There are only a couple more remaining, so carpe diem!

  • Take a trip around the country at the inaugural Black Owned Wine & Spirits Festival on Saturday, September 24 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for a day of cocktails and culture at Rosecroft Raceway.  Although wine and spirits will be the centerpiece of the Black Owned Wine & Spirits Festival, it will also include numerous pairings, tastings, and educational events by top-tier mixologists from around the globe.  Tickets can be purchased at www.blackownedspiritsfestival.com.
  • On September 26, 2016, “An Evening of Culinary Excellence: Celebrating African Americans in Culinary: Past, Present and Future” will be held.  The event is a special food and wine reception to celebrate African Americans’ contributions to cuisines in America and beyond.  The event will also celebrate the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture on National Mall which will open September 24.   The reception will feature gourmet dishes and desserts by celebrity chefs Rock Harper, Timothy Dean, Jumoke Jackson and Padua Player, wines by black-owned wine labels Mouton Noir WinesFlo Wines and P. Harrell Wines and premium chocolates by SPAGnVOLA.  Guests attending will receive a signed copy of the 2014 Fall print issue by Chef Joe Randall, a wine glass and gift bag. Early-bird tickets are $125 and $150 after August 26 and available on www.cuisinenoirmag.com.
