Getting into Equinox for under $50 used to be a dream of mine but it has now become a reality.  Sundays have become the day the adventure and 5-course meals for $45 at one of the Districts renowned dining destinations.  Chef Todd Gray, who has risen to the top of the D.C. culinary scene after opening Equinox over 10 years ago, has passed the torch to Chef de Cuisine Colin McClimans for the Equinox Sunday Adventure Series.  Chef de Cuisine McClimans has basically taken a blank canvas and cleaned out the kitchen refrigerator to create his works of art each Sunday.  Let me explain.

Each Sunday, Chef de Cuisine McClimans takes dinner guests on a 5-course unscripted culinary journey using special ingredients that — because they are in limited amounts — might not make it onto the regular Equinox menu.  This is what makes it an adventure and is not for the picky eater at heart.  Because I live for meals like this, it was a no brainer for me to schedule this in my weekly planner.  Chef de Cuisine McClimans took me on a culinary journey filled with hushpuppies, duck prosciutto and reverse ramen noodle soup.  Naturally, there were parts that I liked more than others but the overall experience is what I went for, the wonderful curiousity of the unknown.

Around these parts, things can become monotonous, so I welcome the challenge to step outside the box and try something completely out of the norm.  Sunday’s Adventure Series is just what this city needs:  extraordinary.  Step outside the norm and try something new especially when the price tag is $45 and includes 5-courses.  My only question now is if this is what they do with the leftovers and unwanted, what do the “chosen ones” include on the regular menu??  They must be good.
