Etiquette Tuesday: Expanding…to the Metro.

Etiquette Tuesday has been forced to expand on the tips of the week.  WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority) will make you do it.  Catching the metro on a regular basis creates new material for etiquette even if that etiquette does not include food.  This week’s tip is:  Share the Pole.  If you catch the metro during any part of rush hour, you understand the lack of hand space to maintain your balance.  Besides the upper hand grips provided, the backs of the metro chairs and poles in the middle of the train are the only things that passengers have to hold on to for balance on the unstable train ride.  Nothing irks me more than the person that leans their entire body on the pole, which makes it impossible for anyone else to hold on to.

This pole is not for body leaning people.  It is for holding.  Please. Stop. Doing. This.  No one else has put out the memo on this so my weekly rant was the perfect time to introduce the idea to the general public.  Some people do this unconsciously and some people are fully conscious of what they are doing.  Either way, let us all try to be more considerate on the metro.  Everyone is trying to get through the ping-pong match during rush hour.  We should work together so that there is some level of comfort in one of the most uncomfortable parts of our day.  Deal?
