unnamedBesides warmer weather and Cherry Blossoms, Spring in the District is awesome because of the events we have to look forward to.  JKGF will be in the building, will you?  Deets below:

The International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) are taking over the District for this years 37th annual conference.  What you can look forward to??  The culinary professions best and brightest putting their techniques on front street for all to taste and see.  I can smell the food already.  The weekend long conference kicks off on March 27, 2015 with a host city opening party and birthday celebration for Jacques Pepin.  Jose Andres has been announced as the keynote speaker and Union Market will be one of the playgrounds for the festivities.  Sounds like JKGF will be there!  Get your tickets here.

The Shaw Main Streets’ 2015 Gala is April 29, 2015 at The Howard Theatre.  This year’s theme is “Spotlight on Shaw,” and is a nod to the gala’s venue, the historic Howard Theatre, and to the audience our neighborhood has attracted as a destination for food, drink, and entertainment.  The host committee is comprised of Shaw star chefs and mixologists, and notably includes a handful of new-to-Shaw chefs/mixologists including Derek Brown/The Columbia Room/Eat The Rich/Mockingbird Hill/Southern Efficiency, Dean Gold/Dino’s Grotto, Daniel O’Brien/Seasonal Pantry/Supper Club, Patrick Robinson/Table, Ron Tanaka/Thally and Aschara Vigsittaboot/Beau Thai. Tickets are $75.00 and can be purchased online at http://smsgala.eventbrite.com.

Wednesday, April 8th is officially National Empanada Day and Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar will be celebrating with a Dollar Empanada Happy Hour during the restaurant’s happy hour from 5 PM to 7 PM.  One can savor four different signature Mamá Amelia’s Empanadas: Picadillo, De la Casa, Queso and Parisen for $1 each.  This year in addition to specials, Cuba Libre will host a cooking class, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, on Wednesday, April 15th.  Priced at $65 per person, including tax and gratuity, the class affords 20 guests with the opportunity to learn how to make Cuba Libre’s signature Mama Amelia’s Empanadas as well as the Total Eclipse Lobster Empanada.   Participants will enjoy a variety of empanadas, along with signature tapas dishes and a complimentary cocktail while they experience this unique hands-on cooking experience.

BEST OF D.C. CELEBRATIONThursday, April 9 – Carnegie Library (801 K St NW, WDC)  Each year, Washington City Paper readers choose their favorite people, places, and services in over 250 categories.  On April 9th  the 3rd annual Best of D.C. Celebration will go down to fete the winners. A portion of ticket sales benefits Brainfood & Girls Rock! DC.  The Best of D.C. Celebration will feature bites from 50 area restaurants, a beer tent, cocktails from 10 of the region’s best mixologists, food trucks, live music on multiple stages and puppies! Cochon 555 is taking over WASHINGTON, D.C.  On Saturday, March 21, chef/owner Victor Albisu and his team at Del Campo will host an epic “Big Beef vs Heritage Pig” themed dinner, which is in conjunction with Cochon 555 Private Dining Cochon “PDC,” a dinner series that celebrates source-driven chefs, prominent winemakers, and humanely certified proteins.  The dinner will be paired with reserve wines. Guests should plan to arrive at 7:00 p.m. for the impressive offering of Reserve Prosciutto di Parma followed by a three-course feast. The culinary experience is a seated dinner paired with wines featuring family-farm raised, antibiotic-free, Creekstone Duroc Pork side-by-side with Creekstone Farm Black Angus Beef. Following the wine pairings, guests will enjoy a discussion of spirits featuring Hirsch and Old Potrero 18th Century from Anchor Distilling. To close the evening, a gift of artisan cheese and short discussion with Brady Lowe.

Pearl Dive Oyster Palace and Black Jack will host “Boil on the Bayou,” a daylong, all-inclusive crawfish boil house party on Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 12pm-5 pm. This will be the only crawfish boil hosted for the season. Two tiers of ticketing, one which will be inclusive of food ($55), and one which will include both food and drinks ($90), will allow guests to enjoy an afternoon of Louisiana crawfish boiled with corn and potatoes and traditional Cajun seasoning, prepared by Chef Colleen Conrad. A whole-roasted, sustainably raised suckling pig roasted on Pearl Dive’s patio in a “La Caja China”, with grilled oysters being fired on top, will also be available. In addition, crawfish hushpuppies, creamy cole slaw, pulled pork sandwiches on the restaurant’s famous Addie’s rolls, pork riblets, and a selection of Southern inspired desserts from pastry chef Carri-Anne Hamer will be on the menu.  Those with a drink inclusive ticket will enjoy unlimited beer from Louisiana’s Abita Brewing Company, as well as ‘Hurricane punch’ made by bar manager E. Jay Apaga. Select white and red wine will be available for the duration of the five-hour event.  A live zydeco band will provide a festive atmosphere throughout the afternoon.  Tickets can be purchased here and does not include tax and gratuity. **Group tickets available for a 10% discount if purchasing eight or more.
