Lunchtime in the City: GRK

[ 0 ] November 5, 2014 |

GRK is a welcome addition to the fast casual restaurants permeating the District lunchtime scene.  The restaurant lunch is set up like what you would see at Chipotle, ShopHouse and Merzi except GRK is serving up gyros.  Gyros (*pronounced Yeero) at GRK are sourced from New Jersey, marinated and roasted and then thinly sliced to serve on either house-baked pita or on a plate.  I had to try the house-baked pita.  So worth every minute of the gym time it cost me.  The house-baked pita is soft and fluffy like a food pillow that when paired with the thinly sliced lamb, makes you think “where did you have lunch before this?”.

GRK boasts house made almost everything, so it was a given that I would want to try all of their tzatziki sauces (*love, love, love a good tzatziki sauce).  Surprisingly, the Kaftero was probably my favorite.  If you know me, you know how I feel about spicy flavors (*frown).  I can, however, appreciate a good spice factor if the flavors are there and Kaftero brought the flavors with habanero, herbs and spices.  I suggest trying all three and finding your palate pleaser between the Kaftero, the GRK (traditional tzatziki) and Prassino (basically a pesto tzatziki sauce).

Besides filling your belly with savory food, GRK offers dessert too.  I suggest pairing it with the rose petal if you have an absolute sweet tooth (it is super sweet and made from actual rose petals) or the Greek honey (so perfect).  You will certainly leave stuffed after lunch at GRK, so try to keep the afternoon meetings to a minimal…
