Dishes We Love: 1905’s Fried Pickles

[ 0 ] November 1, 2013 |

Finding fried pickles around these parts is about as hard as finding someone in DC who does not carry a business card. They are a rare breed. It is intimate spaces like 1905 Restaurant on 9th street that luckily offer surprises on the menu such as fried pickles. Why a surprise? If you ever visit 1905, the décor reminds you more of place where seared steaks and absinthe would line the menu versus modern-day comfort food. The restaurant offers an intimate, dimly lit setting perfect for date night or quiet conversations. The thought that fried pickles, pork butter and collards would be staples on this menu is hard to believe, but it is true.

The fried pickles are sliced lengthwise and deep-fried in batter to create my definition of “pickle fries”. Resembling the image of a steak fry except with a prickly sweet flavor, 1905’s fried pickles make one of my top picks in DC. Sauce is not necessary alongside the fried treats but they add the creamy texture that seems to make fried pickles one of the best indulgences ever. When to visit 1905 for the staples? Anytime. The restaurant has a full dining room, a bar and a rooftop deck so you will have space to nibble and relax before thinking of your next move on U street.
