Bar Hop to Hogo

photoA lapse in my schedule landed me in Hogo one random afternoon and apparently the 5 o’clock hour was the perfect time to pop in for a cocktail.  The dark space offers the bar scene you’re looking for but if you envision the typical tiki bar, Hogo will not offer you that scene.  Most notably known for its rum selection, the bar has over 75 for you to choose your poison.  I stuck with Tom’s Punch on this visit, which was a concoction of Cruzan Light Rum, Black Strap Rum, Spicy Falemum syrup and Ginger Liqueur.  A little on the fruitier side than I would have liked, but with over 75 rums on deck, I have plenty of options to change that on my next visit.

Though a huge rum selection is enough of a draw for yours truly, it’s the bar menu that is more enticing.  Hogo does not subscribe to the in-house chef, instead the tiki bar rotates up and coming chefs weekly.  With a bar menu that’s unpredictable and the broadest rum base in the District, Hogo really does not need to match up to its original title of a tiki bar, it’s making a name of its own.
